HOW TO ACHIEVE AN INDUSTRIAL HOME DESIGN

Inspirational Industrial Design

The Industrial Style was greatly influenced by the look and feel of  factories and warehouses in the 1970’s.This is a design model that grew from England and the USA, at a time when old industrial buildings had to be converted into residential spaces.

Industrial design is all about displaying building materials that are traditionally covered. It is all about creating a raw, unfinished look; think warehouse conversions, Soho lofts with big windows, cute corner shops turned into homes, and little London apartments.

What we love about industrial style is that even if you are not lucky enough to live in an awesome, converted space, you can still make the most of the look. With industrial, you can go all out or just incorporate certain elements into your home decoration.

So, how can you achieve this vintage, industrial design?

Start with a neutral colour palette

With industrial spaces, you will first notice that there are not many bold colours. Instead, a variety of brown and tan warm, neutral shades are used; these are used to create a clean look. If you are lucky enough to live in a home with brick walls, those should absolutely take center stage. If not, you could also consider incorporating a variety of wood, stone and metal pieces into your design.

Create an open layout

Regardless of your surroundings, it is important to try and create an open concept layout for your space. Instead of filling your rooms with clutter, make sure that function is the focus. Keep any pathways as wide as possible, and try to limit purchasing fussy pieces of furniture.

Mix wood and metal furniture

Industrial spaces are all about mixing the old and the new. One way to achieve this, is through using various types of wood and metal pieces throughout your design. Also, these materials should not be new and finished, but furniture that looks like it has a history.

Add in industrial accessories

The key to strengthening your industrial design is to use the correct finishing touches; accessories are a great way to do so. By accessories, we mean lighting fixtures that feature Edison bulbs, parts from factory machines, distressed leather items and vintage photographs and so on.  Anything that looks vintage and from a previous era.  As usual, you will want to make sure to incorporate these touches in a variety of ways throughout the room. Think about incorporating them into your textiles, your wall art, your lighting and in décor items.

Today, this vintage, edgy interior style has captured the imagination of designers everywhere. Industrial decor elements blend well with other design styles too, and commonly make an appearance in contemporary homes.

An industrial design allows us the freedom to embrace antique beauty while still enjoying modern conveniences. Use these tips as a guide, and you will be able to re-create this aesthetic, no matter where you live!
